The Model W950 Wheel/Motor Supply has been designed to excite or power any momentum gyroscope (gyro) manufactured throughout the world. These would include floated RATE gyros; single-degree-of-freedom (SDF) integrating gyros; two-degree-of-freedom (TDF) gyros; and dry, dynamically tuned (DTG) gyros.

Both the frequency and voltage amplitude of the excitation supply must be very stable, enabling a very constant Angular Momentum (H) of the gyroscope. Stable Angular Momentum is one of the requirements for gyros to perform at 0.01 deg/h. or better.

The Model W950 wheel/motor supply gives two (2) or three (3) phase, very stable AC voltage output in a Sine or Square waveform. The Sine wave mode provides the ultimate noise free voltage output, while the Square wave mode provides reduced power consumption for use in a Gyroscope Test Laboratory or in field Ground Support Equipment. All power output stages and remote sense lines are transformer coupled, which prevents any DC voltages from being applied to the gyro wheel/motor.

The W950 offers other key features when testing a gyroscope. The START MODE, or higher Start Voltage, can be timed to a specific decay with respect to the RUN MODE voltage. This will enable the gyro to operate at a lower running power and minimum gyro Run Up Time (RUT) to reach synchronism. Output voltages range from 5.0 to 80.0 Vrms. The supply can receive an external synchronization signal to phase-lock the output frequency of the W950 to the Signal Generator/Pick-Off Supply and Suspension Supply excitation of a gyroscope, if applicable. The supply also can provide the ability of removing the load to enable BACK-EMF measurements to obtain gyro Run Down Time (RDT), which is a measurement of gyro wheel and performance degradation.
